The trip was sweet, but the end result was sweeter for Thundering Ovation in Thursday’s $7,500 Preferred 3 for trotters at Flamboro Downs.
With Paul MacKenzie in charge of mapping out the trip, Thundering Ovation worked her way into the two-hole after starting from the second tier. From there she stalked race leader Dragin The Wagon through panels of :27.4, :57.3 and 1:27.3. MacKenzie launched a deep stretch bid with his charge, and together they used :30.4 closing speed to prevail by a half-length margin over Dragin The Wagon. Third prize went to A Nashty Business.
Gerry Sloan trains the seven-year-old daughter of Thunder Road-Shesintuff for Joanne and Courtney Sloan of Harley, Ont. The family’s homebred, who was named Older Trotting Mare and overall Horse of the Year in London this past season, won for the second time this season and for the 34th time in her career. The victory bumped the homebred’s bankroll over $300,000.
