It was a solid Monday night at the Mohawk Park office for trainer Richard Moreau, who celebrated a three-win performance that included a win in the $34,000 Preferred Trot with Its Academic.
Doug McNair got away third with Its Academic in the six-horse affair while PL Jill shot to the top and chopped out an opening quarter clocked in :29.1. As soon as the field hit the backstretch, McNair hit the gas pedal with Its Academic.
The four-year-old son of Uncle Peter-Annapolis brushed to the lead easily and proceeded to knife his way through middle fractions of :58.1 and 1:27.1. A :28.1 closing quarter was more than enough for Its Academic to win by a length over Perfetto in 1:55.2. Rallying to finish third was Zig Zag.
Brad Grant of Milton, Ont. owns the 14-time winner who won his previous outing, but was set back for a violation of the breaking rule. The $17,000 payday bumped the trotter’s bankroll to $472,234.
Moreau, who leads all trainers for wins at Mohawk Park this season with 12, also found his way to victory lane with Beyond Kronos (1:56.3) and Treasured Tee (1:56.4).
