Longshot players were taking home money with wheelbarrows on Thursday evening at Rideau Carleton Raceway following Hoboken Hanover’s pari-mutuel puzzler in the $13,000 Preferred Pace
.
With Darrell Coville at the controls, the five-year-old son of Cams Card Shark-Haps Hanover survived a first-over trip en route to pulling off a 32-1 shocker in the main event. Coville tucked his charge into the seven-hole while One False Move and Bolero Charles battled to the quarter pole in :27.2 before the latter was allowed to clear to the lead.
Bolero Charles hit the half in a :57-second clip before feeling pressure from Hoboken Hanover on the way to the three-quarter pole in 1:26. Hoboken Hanover’s :29.2 final frame was more than enough to earn him the win by 2-3/4 lengths over Sleek Hunter in 1:55.3. Onyx V A rallied to finish third.
Ted McDonald, who trains the gelding for Lloyd Stone of Portland and Dr. John Tobin of Elgin, ON, watched the pacer win for the third time this season and for the 17th time in his career. Hoboken Hanover bumped his lifetime bankroll to $164,579 with the win.
The Thursday evening program was dominated by driver Guy Gagnon, who made five trips to the winner’s circle during the 15-race program.
He catch-drove Wolf Angus (1:58), Kan Wire (1:59.4) and Luke But Dontouch (1:59.1) to victories in addition to guiding home a pair of winners from his own stable - SOS Poweroflove (1:59.4) and Shipp To Morgan (2:00.4).
Gagnon is just 68 wins away from becoming a member of the 4,000-win club.
