Doober Hoozzitz delivered on her pari-mutuel promise as she tracked down the pacesetter to win Friday's featured $9,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace at Northlands Park.
Trainer/driver Jamie Gray sent Blue Star West to the front of the field and carved out fractions of :29.2, 1:00.1 and 1:29.1 before the Paul Davies-driven Doober Hoozzitz took over the lead in deep stretch. Davies tipped the nine-year-old mare from third approaching the third quarter station and she sprinted home in :28.3 to prevail by one length. The final time of the mile was 1:58 flat over the frozen track. A Special Lady (Brandon Campbell) finished second off a pocket trip while Real Pretty (Bill Tainsh Jr.) came on for third over Blue Star West.
The homebred daughter of Raleigh Fingers, who is trained by Rod Starkewski for owner J. Fred Lamont of Calgary, Alta., now boasts a 2-2-1 record in five starts with $14,580 banked in purses this year.
Doober Hoozzitz paid $4.20 to win.
