In Friday night’s $13,000 Open Pace at Fraser Downs the results came down to a photo finish and it was 18-1 Nazko Daytona who secured a nose decision over the favoured Cash Account
.
Serge Masse put Cash Account on the lead and directed the 8-5 favourite through stations of :26.3, :55.4 and 1:23.4, turning back the first over challenger Lilsharkshooter (Scott Knight) around the final turn. In the stretch, Jim Marino and Nazko Daytona, who were sitting pretty in the pocket, stepped on the accelerator and surged ahead for the narrow victory in a career-best clocking of 1:52.3 over a sloppy track rated one second off. Last week’s winner, Ridgeline (Ed Hensley), rallied off second over cover for the show spot.
Nazko Daytona paid $38.30 to win.
The win was one of four on the 11-race card for Marino and the second in eight starts this year for Nazko Daytona. Greg Smith owns and trains the seven-year-old gelded son of Island Fantasy – Jans Desire, who made his Open debut tonight. The 22-time career winner has earned $18,700 of his $145,991 bankroll this season.
