Trainer Richard Moreau recorded four victories on the 10-race card at Woodbine Mohawk Park Saturday (Feb. 22), one of which came with Wheels On Fire in the $36,000 Preferred Pace.
Driver Louis-Philippe Roy landed Wheels On Fire on the front from post 7 in the evening’s feature and faced little challenge. Through opening splits of :27.3 and :57.1, Wheels On Fire cruised on the helm before accelerating the pace towards three-quarters in 1:24.2. At that point Easy Lover Hanover gave first-over pursuit to the pacesetter circling into the stretch but finished two lengths short of victory in a 1:51.2 mile. Pocket-sitter Matticulous Gb finished third.
A five-year-old gelding by Somebeachsomewhere, Wheels On Fire won his 17th race from 45 starts, earning $246,983. William Donovan owns the $3.90 winner.
Following his win in the feature, Moreau a few races later scored a natural hat trick starting in Race 6 with U Need Stones ($4.20) wiring his competition. Wins from Legion Seelster ($6.10) and Sylph Hanover ($6.70) completed Moreau’s grand slam.
