Eight of Northlands Park’s leading ladies lined up behind the starting gate to contest Friday evening’s $9,000 Fillies & Mares Open, and when the dust settled it was A Special Lady who came out on top.
The eight-year-old daughter of As Promised-Southwind Holley tucked into an early three-hole for trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt, and they tandem at there through panels of :29, :58.3 and 1:27.1. Blue Star Beauty set those fractions, but she couldn’t off the late-charging A Special Lady in the closing strides. A Special Lady got up to win by three-quarters of a length over Sealedwithapromise, while Blue Star Beauty was forced to settle for third prize.
Hoerdt shares ownership on the classy campaigner with James Diakowicz of Calgary and Blair Corbeil of Beaumont, Alberta. It was the second win of the year – and the 23rd to date – for the career winner of $343,915.
Travis Cullen and Gerry Hudon each had a productive night at the office thanks to their respective ‘triples’.
Cullen clicked with Phoenician Gal (1:59.3), Sing Like An Angel (1:57.3) and Yankee Luke (1:58.1) while Hudon celebrated scores with Sheezgotdawoogies (1:59), Mr Brightside (1:56.4) and National Interest (1:57.1).
