With a keen eye for horses, trainer-driver Scott Knight has stamped himself as one of Fraser Downs' leading horsemen.
Knight's horse sense helped him to a special night of racing in recent weeks, which included a sweep of Fraser's Friday, Feb. 8 feature events and a feature article in The Province. Knight steered Dealers Edge to a career-best 1:54 victory in the $25,000 Mr Vancouver Stakes and Thieving Magpie to a 1:55.4 triumph in the $7,500 opening leg of the Spartacus Claiming Series on the same night. Both of which he recently sought out for owner Robert Collier of Victoria, B.C.
“Dealers Edge had been racing well,” explained Knight in the article. “He looked like a real nice horse and was only four years old. He also had good gate speed and kind of had everything I liked. When I mentioned him to Bob, he said go ahead and claim him, so we took him for $11,250.
“I knew [the Mr Vancouver] was only for horses owned by B.C. residents and with his new owner born in B.C., he would be eligible."
Thieving Magpie was claimed for $6,875.
“Thieving Magic was dropping down from tougher competition,” said the Langley, B.C. horseman. “Because of this, it sometimes makes you wonder if you can get them to bounce back.”
Both horses have turned a profit in a short time span for their new connections with Theiving Magpie looking to add to his earnings tonight in the $20,000 Spartacus final at Fraser.
