Winzel Wins Open Trot At Windsor

Winzel rallied home off a perfect second over trip to win the $13,000 Open Trot featured at Windsor Raceway on Wednesday night

Leaving from Post 8 in the nine-horse field, driver Don Rankin Jr. settled the seven-year-old trotter into fourth before picking up cover after the opening quarter mark behind Sure Thing (Nick Steward). Meanwhile, Cadillac Kid (Mark Pezzarello) carved out the race fractions in :27.4, :59, and 1:28.2. As the field rounded the final turn, Rankin Jr. sent his charge three-wide and soared past the competition to score the 1:58.4 triumph. Sure Thing finished three lengths behind in second and Bristol (Skip DeMull) came in third.

Winzel paid $27.10 for the 12-1 upset. The Royal Strength-Worthy Outlaw gelding is trained by Todd Kennedy for Ontario owners Janet Fairall of Windsor, Brittany Kennedy of Dorchester and Nancy and Jack Holmes of Clinton. The win was his second in seven starts this year and 24th lifetime, lifting his career earnings to $148,347.
