Off a pocket trip, Brodys Scrapper powered late to take the $11,500 Horses & Geldings Preferred 2 Pace at Flamboro Downs on Sunday (Feb. 21).
Driver Travis Cullen ducked the 10-year-old Mach Three gelding into the pocket from post 2 behind pylon starter Prestige Seelster, who faced little challenge to take the lead. Prestige Seelster set an uncontested clip of :28.2, :57.1 and 1:26, with a slight first-over challenge coming from J J Powerball moving to the final turn. With little pressure, Prestige Seelster turned for home in front but could not turn away the fresh legs of Brodys Scrapper, as the Rachel Andrew trainee scooted to a one-length victory in 1:54.3. Moonwriter rallied for third.
Co-owned by Cullen with Rachel Andrew, Brodys Scrapper won his 36th race from 172 starts, earning $290,106. He paid $6.00 to win.
Veyron swept to the lead midway through the mile and coasted to a 1:57.2 victory to take the co-featured $11,500 Preferred 2 Handicap Trot.
Zack To The Max took the lead heading to a :28.3 opening quarter while Veyron settled into second, with the leader continuing unpressured to a :59.1 half. Off the slow second quarter, driver J Harris circled Veyron from the pocket to the lead and continued to roll towards three-quarters in 1:28.2 before capping the mile one-and-a-half lengths better than closing Sizzlen Hot Herbie. Zack To The Max faded to third.
An eight-year-old gelding by Muscles Yankee, Veyron won his 15th race from 93 starts, earning $189,668. Paul Cameron conditions the $5.50 winner for owner TJS Stable.
