In New York, praises continue to rain down for the state's overly-successful racino program, which, in Sullivan County alone, has generated $25 million for the county and employs roughly 580 people

.

According to a report by the New York Gaming Association, an economic impact analysis of racinos for the state indicates that the racino in the area, Monticello Raceway, generates more than $37 million for the region and the state and creates significant economic churn within the county.

Meanwhile, in Ontario the provincial government is considering slashing the highly-successful slots-at-racetracks program. The recommendation came via the province's highly-contentious Drummond Report.

The province of Ontario receives $261 million a year directly from the horse racing industry and its participants. The industry as a whole also accounts for $2 billion in annual expenditures, up 67 per cent from 2000.

The Ontario horse-racing industry also employs roughly 60,000 people. Together, the Ontario horse-racing industry represents the same number of Ontario employees as the province’s entire public sector. A total of $1.5 billion in wages and salaries are sustained annually by total expenditures of the Ontario horse racing and breeding industry.
