With trainer/driver Tim Brown in tow, Classy Character took his second straight victory in the Open Pace on Saturday afternoon at Fraser Downs
.
The seven-year-old son of Shady Character was first off the gate in the $15,000 event, but settled for the pocket spot when stablemate Neal Diamonique (David Hudon) rushed up for the lead after the opening quarter in 28 seconds. He led past the half in :57 and three-quarters in 1:25.3 before facing a challenge from Cash Account (Carl Sibiga), who reached the front after overcoming some road trouble before the final turn. As the field turned for home, it looked as if Cash Account would pull off the 22-1 upset, but Classy Character had other plans. The 1-2 co-favourite surged home for the win in 1:54.1.
Cash Account finished half a length back in second and Warrawee Iceman (Darren Howald) came on for third.
Winning his third race in four starts this year, Classy Character has earned $22,500 for owners Sandra Brown of Langley and Jack Thompson of Burnaby, B.C. With 28 career wins, the bay gelding has banked over $280,000 in purses.
