Favourites First At Rideau

Chalks charged home first in the Sunday, Feb. 17 features at Rideau Carleton Raceway with National Debt taking the $8,100 Preferred Pace and Pasadena Star the $8,100 Preferred Trot.

National Debt dashed from post seven into third as The Roadies ranged towards the top past a :27.1 first quarter. Driver Pascal Berube soon edged first over with the eight-year-old Allamerican Native stallion and pressed the pace through a :55.4 half and 1:25.1 third quarter. National Debt seized command into the stretch as Doctor Royal rallied off the rail to finish second by a half length in the 1:55 mile. Stonebridge Beach, sitting last of eight, closed for third.

Owned by Francois Morin, National Debt won his 40th race from 136 starts, earning $449,255. Yves Tessier trains the $3.60 winner.

Pasadena Star, sitting last of six, swept the field rounding the final turn to take the Preferred Trot as the odds-on favourite in 1:57.2.

Jetcrest jetted to the lead before yielding to Lmc Mass Gem for the pocket past a :27.4 opening quarter. Lmc Mass Gem then strolled on the front to the half in :58.2 as The Back Nine tipped first over from fourth heading to the backstretch.

By three-quarters in 1:27.4, Pasadena Star fanned three wide off the rail and rolled by rivals circling the final turn. The eight-year-old Kadabra gelding overtook Lmc Mass Gem through the lane to win by a length and a half on the wire. The Back Nine settled for third.

Winning his 33rd race from 144 starts, Pasadena Star has earned $374,866. Stephane Pouliot trains and drives the $3.20 winner for owner 9096 9205 Quebec Inc.
