Trainer Gary McDonald swept the Late Daily Double with Monarch Seelster and 26-1 upsetter Mystical Liz to complete a Sunday hat trick at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Teaming up with driver Sylvain Lacaille, McDonald earned his first win on the 15-race card with his own trotter Summerhill Charles ($20.30) scoring a narrow 2:01.2 victory in the eighth race. Trotting mare Monarch Seelster ($9) later cruised to a 2:00.4 one length triumph in the 14th dash before pacing mare Mystical Liz ($54.10) prevailed by three-quarters of a length in 1:58.1 in the finale. The 'McDonald Double' paid $47.50.
McDonald's training triple pushed his 2013 win total to 13. Lifetime, he has sent out 676 winners from his stable to more than $3.79 million in purse earnings.
