After nearly two months dark, horses circled the track at The Raceway at Western Fair District for the first card of the 2021 season on Tuesday (Feb. 16).
The opening-night card featured 11 races, with a pair of $8,800 events on the card serving as the evening's features. Heza Handy Man opened the card with a near wire-to-wire win in an $8,200 conditioned event, winning in 2:00.4 for the brother team of Mike and Mark Horner.
In the $8,800 trot, driver Louis-Philippe Roy looped the field moving for the final turn and landed in front at the finish of the mile-and-a-sixteenth affair, timed in 2:08.1. The five-year-old Cantab Hall gelding competes for trainer Richard Moreau and paid $6.60 to win.
Curious Cortez capitalized off a pocket trip in the $8,800 pace to win by a head in 2:01 over pacesetter and pylon starter Spectrum Seelster. Colin Kelly steered the $5.10 winner for trainer Jared Bako.
With 11 races, The Raceway handled $539,668 in their first card following the forced shutdown of racing in Ontario, which began on Dec. 26, 2020.
