Veteran pacer Western Nitro overcame a trailing tier post 10 start to win the $7,500 second leg of the Spartacus Claiming Series on Friday night at Fraser Downs.

Trained and driven by Dave Hudon and owned by Kelly Hudon after being claimed from the opening leg last weekend, Western Nitro rallied three-wide down the backstetch en route to the 1:56.1 triumph. Classic Ambition (David McKellar) finished three-quarters of a length behind on the far outside, edging out the pylon-skimming Thieving Magpie (Scott Knight), the round one series winner.

Western Nitro notched his 32nd career win and lifted his bankroll to $314,911.

The 10-year-old Western Hanover gelding, who finished third in the first leg of the Spartacus, paid $4.90 to win as part of the favoured entry. His stablemate, Tre Bien (John Hudon), finished fourth.

The top two finishers were both claimed from the second leg for $10,000. Western Nitro will now race in the name of Surrey's Richard Young while Classic Ambition moves into the care of Keith Clark, Doris McDougall, and Verne Rea.
