Longshot Meadowview Vicky and driver Alfie Carroll advanced from second-to-last to win the $7,500 Preferred 3 Trot on a -16 degree Sunday evening (Feb. 14) at Flamboro Downs, sparking a $61.10 win payout.
Sent postward as the second-longest shot on the board at odds of 29-1, Meadowview Vicky settled in line in eighth place with only the early breaker beaten at the start of the Preferred event. Meanwhile, 68-1 shot Musical Spell (James MacDonald) left outside of 'Vicky' from post eight and worked to the top by the :28.4 first quarter mark, clearing ahead of Inkeeper (Bob McClure) and 3-5 favourite Guiltywithanexcuse (Anthony MacDonald).
During the second panel, Oaklea Wyatt (Daniel Potvin) commenced a first over bid, poking a head in front at the :59.2 half-mile mark, with Meadowview Vicky following his cover. Oaklea Wyatt worked clear of Musical Spell down the backstretch and was then confronted by Meadowview Vicky past the 1:29 three-quarters mark.
Meadowview Vicky eventually wore down Oaklea Wyatt in deep stretch for the victory in 1:59.3, prevailing by a quarter-length. Guiltywithanexcuse finished third, with Innkeeper and Blazing Shot (Paul MacKenzie) rounding out the top five finish order.
Mark Etsell trains Meadowview Vicky for owner/breeder Meadowview Farms Inc. of Orono, Ont. The Muscle Mass mare is now three-for-four in her five-year-old campaign, with her Sunday win being a season's best clocking.
