Angostura Hanover out-finished her stablemate Style For A Mile to top a 1-2 finish for the Kyle Fellows stable in the $40,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace on Friday, Feb. 13 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
After a ground-saving trip through fractions of :27.2, :56.3 and 1:25.2, catch-driver Bob McClure found a clear path for Angostura Hanover in the stretch towards the center of the track as Style For A Mile (Daryl Thiessen) rallied off the cover of even-money favourite and late leader Absolution (Todd Ratchford). Style For A Mile caught Absolution in deep stretch but Angostura Hanover rolled right on by as they approached the wire and prevailed by half a length over her barn buddy in 1:54.1. Absolution settled for third with Century Jamila (Louis-Philippe Roy) finishing fourth over pacesetter Tells On A Roll (Travis Cullen).
Scoring her second victory in six seasonal starts, Angostura Hanover, the second-longest shot on the board at 9-1, paid $20.80 to win and topped a Fellows exacta worth $118.90 with Style For A Mile let go at odds of 8-1.
An 18-time career winner with just shy of $550,000 in earnings, the six-year-old Betting Line-Armbro Amoretto mare is owned by Dr. Peter Johnston of Cavan Monaghan, Ont., and Craig Watkins of Newcastle, Ont.
The win followed two others for McClure on Friday night, including one with 10-1 shot Lilys Lass ($22.20) in 1:58.2 in a $20,000 Pop-Up Series final for conditioned trotters. The seven-year-old mare, who joined the Ronald MacDonald stable off a mid-January claim and won an opening leg division of the series, is owned by Brett MacDonald of Freelton, Ont., Shen Guo of Waterloo, Ont. and Hartel Maintenance Inc. of Guelph, Ont. This series was written for starters for a purse of $9,000 or less in their last three starts (winners over $50,000 in 2025 not eligible), with non-winners of $20,000 in a minimum of 10 starts in 2025 also eligible.
