Markathy on the heels of three straight wins versus claiming foes jumped up to take on Preferred company Monday evening at The Raceway at Western Fair District, and he passed the tougher test with flying colours.

Colin Kelly got away sixth the suddenly streaking Markathy, who watched Brocks Fortune hammer out first half fractions of :29.2 and 1:00.1 in the $8,500 event for horse and gelding pacers. Beach Terror brushed to the lead going to the three-quarter pole, and he was the leader past that marker in 1:29.3.

Markathy followed the cover of race favourite Beach Terror, and quickly applied pressure to the new leader around the final turn. Markathy’s closing speed of :29.4 helped him post the head decision over Bringhome Theblue in 1:59.3. Drake rallied from last to finish third in the eight-horse affair.

Lindsey Kerr trains the seven-year-old son of Mister Big-Sunbather for owner Ellie Mayhew of Windsor, Ont. The gelding now boasts a 4-0-1 record from seven starts this season. The 20-time winner is quickly closing in on $100,000 in career earnings.
