The Flamboro Downs’ faithful were fond of Perfect Lover in Thursday’s $8,500 Preferred 3, and the gelding didn’t let down an army of backers that made him the even-money favourite in the trotting tilt.
Perfect Lover got away sixth in the seven-horse affair for driver Robert Shepherd, who watched Musical Spell fire to the front and chop out fractions of :28.3, :59.1 and 1:29.2. Shepherd found cover for his charge on the way to the three-quarter pole, and a :29.3 final frame was enough to earn Perfect Lover the win by 1-1/2 lengths over Musical Spell in 1:59.2. Third prize was earned by Pollar Hall.
Lyle MacArthur trains the five-year-old son of Kadabra-Perfect Aim for partners Linda Wellwood, Tammy Aspden and Murray Neilson. It was the first win of the season for the nine-time winner who is closing in on $70,000 in lifetime earnings.
