Dismissed at 49-1, Pathian followed cover beautifully and pulled off the shocking upset in Wednesday’s $15,500 Filly & Mare Winners Over $10,000 Life Pace at The Meadows.
Although Pathian had been sharp in conditioned races, she hadn’t beaten the track’s elite distaff pacers. That all changed when she picked up the live cover of Princess Pablano, overtook her in deep stretch and defeated her by a neck for Aaron Merriman in 1:57.2 on a “good” surface. She Nuit rallied for show.
Jamie Coffy owns and trains Pathian, a seven-year-old daughter of Classic Photo-Blazing Glass who pushed her career bankroll to $108,087.
Tony Hall piloted four winners on the 13-race card.
Pathian’s improbable win contributed to a $22,931.41 three-day carryover in the Pick 5, which prompted The Meadows to establish a $40,000 total-pool guarantee for Saturday’s Pick 5 (races eight through 12). First post Saturday is 1 p.m.
