For the second consecutive week, Cusdmagicdragon ($2.30) took on — and defeated — the best older pacers in British Columbia, posting a 1:53.2 win over mixed company in Wednesday's (Dec. 9) $8,100 Open Pace at Fraser Downs.
The five-year-old Custard The Dragon mare was strung out by Rockin Mystery through a :26.3 first quarter, but was able to clear for control of the pace with just over a circuit to go. Once in front, driver Scott Knight was able to rein Cusdmagicdragon back a bit through a :56 half before accelerating again up the far side.
On the backstretch, Cusdmagicdragon used a :28.2 third quarter to evade the first-over challenge of Intrigued Again (Tony Kerwood), and then found another gear off the home turn to keep pocket rival Rockin Mystery (Rod Therres) two lengths at bay for her second consecutive win over mixed company. Intrigued Again preserved third, another 1-1/4 lengths back.
Trainer Kelly Hoerdt co-owns 29-time winner Cusdmagicdragon with breeders Blair and Erna Corbeil.
Jim Marino registered a training hat trick on the eight-race card, teaming up with driver Bill Tainsh Jr. to win with Big Little Lie ($11.10, 1:58.1), Tito Santanna ($6.90, 1:54.3) and Shaleslittlespirit ($3.40, 1:57.3).
