The trip was perfect and the end result was a thing of beauty for Mr Mach Jimmy in Monday’s $8,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers at The Raceway at Western Fair District.

Mr Mach Jimmy, who was sent off as the 2-1 favourite in the eight-horse affair, got away sixth from his second tier starting spot while Buckeroo marched to the lead and served up an opening quarter in :28.4.

Buckeroo was still in charge of setting the speed at the mid-way point in :59.4, but Reel was first-over and driving while Mr Mach Jimmy was popped to the outside and tracking cover from second over. Buckeroo maintained the lead at the three-quarter pole in 1:29, but he couldn’t go the distance. Mach Mach Jimmy used a :30.2 closing quarter to rally to the one-length score over Buckeroo in 2:00. Reel held on gamely to finish third.

Lindsey Kerr trains the six-year-old son of Mach Three-Rosebud Stena for owner Sally Charlton of Tecumseh, Ont. The gelding, who last won a race on Sept. 8, has managed to hit the ticket in each of his last six outings. Colin Kelly mapped out the winning trip for the 17-time winner who is just shy of $200,000 in career earnings.
