Horseman Shawn Thayer reached a major career milestone this past weekend in Maine.
Thayer, 41, recorded his 1,000th career driving victory Saturday at Scarborough Downs when he steered one of his pupils, Itsallaboutmike, to a wire-to-wire victory in 2:05.3.
Over the course of his career, Thayer has steered his mounts to more than $2.3-million in purses.
In terms of training, charges sent out from Thayer’s barn have raced to $776,000 in purse earnings and have made 215 trips to the winner’s circle from 989 starts, good for a training average of .343.
As a report by The Bangor Daily News explains, Thayer has been a regular participant along the Maine harness racing circuit for two decades and was the driving champion at Scarborough Downs last season.
