Favourite Illwinifican ($3.20) prevailed through the passing lane off a pocket trip in this week's $12,000 Open Pace featured on a foggy Friday night, December 8 at Fraser Downs.
Driven by Scott Knight, the five-year-old Allamerican Native gelding tracked 2-1 second choice Royal Renegade from the pocket through fractions of :26.4, :56.1 and 1:25 while Lisplaced launched a first-over attack. Down the stretch, Illwinifican shot through the passing lane to down Royal Renegade by one and a half lengths with Southwind Jaden edging out Lisplaced two lengths behind in a photo for show. The time of the mile was 1:54.1 over the 'good' track.
Illwinifican, who was a runner-up last week in the Jim Vinnell Memorial Pace, notched his ninth win this year and has banked $83,020 in 20 starts for trainer Dennis Johnston and co-owner Ray Thomson.
