Zip The Lip pushed his win streak up to four after beating his rivals in the $1,800 Open Trot on Sunday afternoon at Red Shores' Charlottetown Driving Park.
Regular pilot Brian MacPhee and Zip The Lip left hard off the gate and took command of the race past the opening quarter. The son of Ken Warkentin delivered as the post time favourite over Abundaspin and Majian Dillon for his ninth win from 26 seasonal starts for trainer Donald Sweet and co-owner Orville Willis of O'Leary, P.E.I. The time of the mile was 2:02.2.
Horseman Jason Hughes had a big day at the track winning four of the 11 races, including the Sunday feature event with Capitalism.
The Stratford, P.E.I. native used rail control to his advantage as he sent the four-year-old son of Tell All to the front, carving fractions of :28.3, :59.4 and 1:29.2 before cruising home in :29.3 to stop the timer in 1:59 flat over the legendary CDP oval. McJestic rallied for second with Tempo Seelster completing the triactor. The 1-6-7 combination paid $81. Capitalism is owned by Jason Collings of Mount Stewart, P.E.I.
Hughes also drove his stable stars Isleofpalms (2:01.3), Blue Star Outlaw (1:59.1) and Bunny Mach (1:59.1).
Meet leading driver Marc Campbell recorded a double to reach five winners over the weekend. One of his winning mounts was Kevin MacLean's 10-year-old homebred Rebelryan, who converted off a pocket trip to notch his 50th career victory in 1:59.1.
