According to an article by the BBC, 12 of the 70 horses that were stabled at the Elmwood Equestrian Centre, which is located in Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex, England, lost their lives in the blaze. Another outlet has reported the toll as being 15.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at roughly 11:30 p.m. Passer-bys tried their hardest to save some of the horses, but could not save all of them.

According to the BBC, David Shaw, who has been identified as a business partner of one of the centre’s owners, has said that the situation has left him feeling “gutted.”

An investigation into the fatal fire is currently underway.
