Recent developments in the horse racing industry have seen many tracks look to scrap or reduce mid-week race dates in favour of weekend cards. At least one track is going against that trend.
An article by goerie.com explains that Pennsylvania thoroughbred raceway Presque Isle Downs has applied to eliminate its live Friday and Saturday night cards of live racing in 2013, instead opting to focus on a schedule which would run Sundays through Thursdays.
The track's president and GM Mike Tamburelli has said that the proposed move was settled upon by the raceway in an effort to capture more off-track wagering action.
"There are limited tracks that race Sunday through Tuesday and we are confident that this will help increase our racing handle and our national awareness so that we may continue to bring in the highest quality horses, trainers and jockeys,'' Tamburelli was quoted as saying.
Tamburelli added that the new change would allow the track "to remain more competitive and become more profitable."
