Vawns Chip, last year’s champion of the Iceman Trot Claiming Series, captured his $5,000 second leg division of this year’s series for new connections Saturday night at Sudbury Downs

Driven by Justin Turcotte, the veteran gelding rallied off cover and edged out pacesetter R M Shy (Paul MacLean) to capture his division in 2:03.2 by a neck over a track rated 'good' and two seconds off. Canaco Pop (Wayne MacLean) finished right there in third.
Vawns Chip ($2.90), who won last year's Iceman Series for trainer-driver Wayne MacLean, is now trained and owned by Jean Paul Rheaume. The 10-year-old son of Pine Chip-Vawns Victory, a career winner of $265,000, has won 14 times in 35 starts this year while banking nearly $50,000.
The other second leg division went to Donald Rankin ($5.20), who rallied from last to win in 2:05.1 for driver Paul MacLean and trainer France MacLean. Lady Sylberun (Richard Turcotte) finished one length behind with pacesetter Mimis Express (Gerry Belanger) back in third.
The 10-year-old son of Conway Hall-Super Mixed notched his eighth win in 25 seasonal starts and lifted his earnings to $28,128 for 2010 and $275,319 lifetime. Paul MacLean co-owns the gelding with Brenda Gauthier of Azilda, Ont.
