The battle for the Charlottetown driving title went right down to the wire with Marc Campbell and Jason Hughes ultimately finishing in a dead-heat for the top honour.
Campbell had held a one-win lead over Hughes (124-123) entering the final race card of the year at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park on Wednesday. Hughes tied things up in his first drive of the night, winning the second race aboard Rylan Express ($3.70), before Campbell pulled ahead again driving Rash B Havior ($2.90) to a romping win in race nine.
Hughes then won back-to-back races, capturing the 11th with Cambest Kisser ($3) and the 12th with Narragansett ($4.40), to take the lead.
Campbell came right back winning the next dash with Eagle Jolt ($10.20) to tie Hughes atop the leaderboard and came up just three-quarters of a length short of claiming sole ownership of the title in the finale.
The final win total for each reinsman was 126 races -- just four away from Campbell's single season win record at Charlottetown of 130 that he set in 2012.
Hughes, who already swept the training and driving titles at Summerside Raceway, also won the 2014 training title at Charlottetown. His three New Year's Eve victories were with horses from his own stable and pushed his win count to 75.
