Somebody Special scored off a second-over journey in the $27,397 Winners Over Select Trot at Bally’s Dover on Tuesday, Dec. 30.

Fireworks started early when Plumville Prince (Tony Morgan) and speedball Last Glow (Jack Parker Jr.) battled one another approaching the quarter pole. Last Glow finally cleared to the lead only after being parked out by Plumville Prince through an opening quarter in :28.1, then backed down the speed to the half in :57.3.

Speed Away braved the gusty winds and freezing temperatures first-over up the backstretch with Somebody Special, the mare racing against the boys, getting a perfect second-over trip from Tim Tetrick. Last Glow continued on the lead to three-quarters in 1:27.1. Somebody Special, the 8-5 favourite, circled three-wide at the top of the lane when Last Glow and Speed Away began to tire, and she powered to a 1-1/4-length victory in 1:57. Speed Away marched on for a place finish over Last Glow.

Somebody Special, a four-year-old daughter of Swan For All-Lima Simplicity, is owned by Jaypaul Hoover. Chuck Crissman Jr. trains the mare, a 22-time winner from 66 lifetime starts. The win price was $5.40.

Tetrick had a four-bagger on the 15-race card.

Bally’s Dover will host racing on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The Wednesday, Dec. 31 feature will be the fourth-race Fillies and Mares Open Pace. Ballast and Huntress will do battle.
