Clearing command past the quarter, eight-year-old Whosurboy mare Bryn Baroness went the added distance to take the $9,400 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 Pace to cap the Tuesday, Dec. 3 program at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
Driver Scott Coulter landed Bryn Baroness on the lead pasat a :29.1 first quarter with Alphabet Queen yielding for the pocket. Cayo Loco, parked from the start, progressed uncovered towards the pacesetter to apply minor pressure into a :59 half but stalled nearing three-quarters in 1:28.3.
Bryn Baroness meanwhile opened her lead spinning for the stretch, leading Cayo Loco by six lengths before completing the mile-and-a-sixteenth event in 2:06.2 under wraps. Cayo Loco narrowed on her margin to finish second by four-and-three-quarter lengths with race-favourite Casino Classic closing for third.
Co-owned by trainer Keith Cullen with Chris Cain, Bryn Baroness won her ninth race from 39 starts this season and her 14th from 67 overall, earning $75,626. She paid $5.50 to win.
Earlier in the card Scene A Magician sweeped the field to pull a 10-1 upset in the $8,500 Preferred 3 Trot.
The five-year-old Daylon Magician gelding sat sixth while Lets Leavem launched from post 7 for the lead past a :29 first quarter. Driver Greg Dustin grabbed cover for Scene A Magician heading to a 1:00.2 half as 6-5 favourite On The Sly ventured first over but stalled at three-quarters in 1:30.3. Dustin circumvented his cover and reeled in Lets Leavem through the lane to hit the finish in 2:01.3 with a neck in front. Pocket-sitter Meadowbranch Patsy finished third.
Owned and trained by Jennifer Pinkerton, Scene A Magician won his fourth race from 18 starts this season and his 12th from 54 overall, earning $172,133. He paid $23.40 to win.
