Century Jamila shot up the pylons and passed a pair of top mares in the stretch to upset at 26-1 in the featured $30,000 conditioned pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday, Dec. 27.
Travis Henry commanded speed from the inside starter, procuring a pocket seat for Century Jamila behind Avyanna (Tyler Borth) as the rest of the early leavers took back. Avyanna cut the first-half splits of :26.1 and :55.3, then upped the tempo as So Much More (James MacDonald) made her move first-over before the midway point.
Century Jamila remained bottled up through three-quarters in 1:24.1, then squeezed up the pylons at the eighth pole and took the lead with a quick burst. Avyanna and So Much More battled on, and Angostura Hanover (Trevor Henry) arrived late at the rail, but Century Jamila broke the beam first to win in 1:52.2. Angostura Hanover was up for second, a half-length short of the winner, and So Much More finished third.
Century Jamila won for the first time since returning from a four-month layoff in November, improving her seasonal record to eight wins in 25 starts. The five-year-old Bettors Delight-Exotic Pleasure mare is now 19-for-77 lifetime with a bankroll of $386,966. Dave Menary trains her for Pollack Racing LLC of Venetia, Pa. She paid $54.20 to win.
