Phanatical Maniac Slingshots At Century

Glenn and Janine Lutz's Phanatical Maniac ($5.60) vaulted off live cover to a 5-1/4 length victory in the Boxing Day (Dec. 26) feature at the Century Mile, a $7,300 upper-level conditioned pace.

Phil Giesbrecht angled Phanatical Maniac out of seventh and into a loose but live flow up the backstretch, chasing the first-over Canadian Pharoh (James Jungquist) toward the far turn after Marlons Magic (Mike Hennessy) clicked off a :56 first half. Canadian Pharoh put Marlons Magic away nearing three-quarters in 1:25, and Phanatical Maniac found his best upon straightening for home.

Phanatical Maniac, an eight-year-old As Promised gelding, surged to the fore in mid-stretch and drew clear willingly to post a 1:54 victory, the 15th of his career. HF Thegreatpumpkin (David Kelly) pulled the pocket off the home turn to escape traffic and narrowly reached second over Canadian Pharoh.
