While Phil Hudon wasn't able to guide young trotter Kilmer Road to victory on Thursday night at Woodbine Racetrack, he was able to save the horse from what could have been a catastrophic accident.
As seen in the video below, Kilmer Road was becoming increasingly difficult to steer and headed for the ditch on the outside of Woodbine's Standardbred racetrack. Hudon managed not only to stay on board, but redirect the Ivan Gallant-trained trotter back to the racing surface safely.

"He didn't break anything he was just locked on the right line jogging around," Hudon told Trot Insider. "I was too close to the edge and couldn't grab the left line to let him see the ditch. The left line come out of my hand after the first 'jump'."
After guiding the horse as a two-year-old, Hudon wasn't expecting Kilmer Road to behave in such a way but noted that the horse was still on that line as they left the gate to start the race. He said the connections will be taking a look at the horse's teeth as a possible cause for the behaviour.
After the ordeal, Kilmer Road and Hudon even managed to grab a cheque by finishing fifth.
