No U.S. T-Bred Triple Crown In 2010?

According to a top New York racing official, there is certainly a possibility that one of the three events which comprises thoroughbred racing's triple crown in the

United States will not be contested in 2010.

The 2010 edition of the Belmont is in question because the governor and legislators can't agree on a plan to revitalize the state's premiere racetracks. NYRA is waiting for money that would come from a long-delayed plan to set up video lottery terminals at Aqueduct racetrack.

The Belmont Stakes, the third and final jewel of the triple crown, is scheduled for June 5 at Belmont Park.

In an article by the NY Daily News, New York Racing Association president Charles Hayward was quoted as saying that his association -- which operates Belmont -- will run out of money "in the May-June time frame."

Hayward was quoted as saying: "If we can't make payroll, we have to shut down. There is certainly a possibility that Belmont may not open and there will be no third leg of the triple crown."
