Reports from North Sydney, N.S. indicate that an early morning barn fire on Monday, Dec. 20 has claimed the lives of 14 Standardbred racehorses.

According to Firefighters Of Nova Scotia, six fire departments were dispatched to a barn fire in North Sydney on Frenchvale Road at 4:30 a.m. on Monday morning. The cause of the fire, which had destroyed most of the barn by the time firefighters arrived, remains under investigation.

"Barn's gone, horses are gone," an emotional Joe Nearing, who lost three horses in the blaze, was quoted as saying in a CBC News report. "It's just not a good day today. It's devastating, really... It's your best friend, that's all I can say. There's no other way to explain it."

According to reports from Cape Breton, trainer Kevin Bailey also lost horses in the fire. A GoFundMe Page has been established to provide assistance to those impacted.

Trot Insider will update this story with more information as it becomes available.

So sad to learn of the recent fires and horse owners losses. Is there another way of donating to the cause other that the Go Fund Me fund. Huge harness racing fan. Ron Clarke
