Montenegro tucked in behind the favourite, Darena Hanover, then blew by her in the lane to pull off an 11-1 upset victory in Friday’s $18,000 Filly & Mare Not Listed Preferred/Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.
Montenegro was caught wide the first quarter, but when Tony Hall steered her to the pocket, the five-year-old daughter of Camluck got welcome cover and scored in 1:54 on a “good” track. Darena Hanover was second, two and three-quarter lengths back, while Isabellas Magic rallied for show.
Randy Bendis trains Montenegro, a 12-time winner this year, and co-owns with Tom Pollack.
The win was one of four on the 16-race card for Hall.
