Dismissed at 10-1, Trustworthy Kid rallied three wide around the final turn and went on to capture Friday’s $18,000 Winners Over $10,000 Life/Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows.
Trustworthy Kid got away at the back of the back and, when third over, appeared to have excess cover. But when Brian Zendt tipped him three wide, he roared through a stretch rendered ‘good’ by persistent snow squalls and scored in 1:56.4. Rompaway Galaxy was second, a length back, with Keystone Chester third.
Walter 'Boots' Dunn trains Trustworthy Kid, a six-year-old SJs Caviar—Penn Worthy Lane gelding who now boasts a lifetime bankroll of $339,302, for owner/breeder Dunn Stable.
In Friday’s companion feature, the $18,000 Filly & Mare Winners Over $10,000 Life/Preferred Handicap Trot, Anaffairtoremember got the jump on the field with a powerful uncovered brush and held on to defeat Mistress Valentine — who shook loose late — by a length in 1:55.4. Bessie rallied for show.
Aaron Merriman drove for owner/trainer Bill Bercury. With the victory, the five-year-old daughter of Angus Hall-Val Lee Woman vaulted over $400,000 in career earnings.
Tony Hall, Jim Pantaleano and Chris Shaw each piloted three winners on the 15-race card.
