It’s been a great week for trainer Richard Moreau. On Monday he was named an O’Brien Award finalist in the Trainer of the Year category, and earlier tonight he did more of what got him there – he won a bunch of races at Georgian Downs.

The Puslinch, ON horseman captured three races on the 12-race card including the $15,000 Preferred Trot with Watkins, who was driven to victory by another O’Brien Award finalist, Sylvain Filion.

Moreau watched Filion hustled Watkins to the lead from the pole position and the five-year-old son of Striking Sahbra-Sarong Hall successfully chopped out panels of :28.1, :57.2 and 1:27.3 before using a :29.3 closing quarter to win by five lengths in 1:57.1. Sir Winston was second with Oaklea Tyson taking home third prize.

Sent off as the 1-2 favourite, Watkins got the job done for owner Matthew McManus of Burlington, ON. The 21-time winner, who has constructed a 6-4-5 record from 24 trips postward this season, has stashed away in excess of $53,000 this year and more than $286,000 to date.

Moreau and Filion kicked off the card winning with Honey Hush (1:58.4) and they also captured the fourth race with Art I Special (1:55.2).

The 2012 season marks the best ever for Moreau, who has racked up 327 wins and has watched the horses from his stable bank close to $3.5 million.
