Grand River Raceway in Elora, ON is pleased to announce the addition of a new stake race.

The Battle Of The Belles will be carded as the companion race to the track's signature dash, the Battle Of Waterloo.

The Battle Of The Belles will be contested by two-year-old Ontario-sired pacing fillies for a guaranteed purse of $150,000. Elimination divisions will be held on July 27, 2009. A $20,000 consolation race and the final will be contested during the track's signature event, Industry Day, on August 3, 2009.

"Grand River Raceway continues to foster initiatives which promote the breeding, raising and racing of Ontario-bred horses," said Grand River Raceway General Manager, Dr. Ted Clarke. "The Battle Of The Belles will be a nice addition to our Industry Day card. We're currently working to freshen up our signature event, and this is a great first step.

"Over the past few years, we've discussed the introduction of a companion race for the Battle Of Waterloo with several of our local horsepeople," said Clarke. "We developed the concept with their input and advice. And, the timing is perfect to roll out this race, as 2008 was the final year of the Trillium Series for two-year-old fillies."

Nominations for the Battle Of The Belles are due February 15, 2009.

Here is a track that has the horsepeoples interest at heart, some others could learn a lesson.

If Grand River wants to promote the breeding, raising and racing of Ontario-bred horses why not make the event for 4yr olds when Ontario-sired stake program is ending for these horses???

Nice to see places like Grand River and Georgian in particular move ahead and continue to break new ground to improve the sport and generate interest. Not coincidentally...these are also the most family friendly tracks around and from what I read and witness they both continue to bring in more fans and generate increases in handle. Maybe some others could learn from their efforts.

It was over to fast they should right a double header that day with a country music concert after it seems a shame when all kinds of people are their not to take advantage of it
