Trotting mare Kandor Hanover, who banked $530,494 in her career, has been officially retired by her connections due to a tendon injury, which occurred in her latest start at The Meadows on December 12.
The speedy daughter of Tagliabue-Katelyns Glory raced the majority of her career on the Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) circuit before racing primarily at The Meadows in 2012 for trainer Bill Zendt.
Kandor Hanover’s biggest payday came with a close second-place finish in the $349,000 Armbro Flight last year at Mohawk Racetrack.
The 25-time winner finished top three in 56 of her 108 career starts. She swept the Celias Counsel Trotting Series as a sophomore in 2009 and captured the Lifetime Dream Trotting Series final in 2010 before being named an O'Brien Award finalist.
Veteran horseman John Burns had developed and trained Kandor Hanover. He also shares ownership of the six-year-old mare with Patrick Huber and Online Stables.
“She was sitting third and put in a bad step going to the three-quarter pole,” said Burns. “She then made a break before the wire and we knew there was something wrong. He [Bill Zendt] got her fluoroscoped on Saturday morning and there was a 60 per cent tear so we elected to call it a career.”
Burns trained Kandor Hanover’s dam, Katelyns Glory along with the second dam, Shipps Katelyn, which led him to purchase Kandor Hanover as yearling for a mere $7,000.
“She was a terrific mare to have and she came from a very good family,” said Burns. “She was a pleasure to have in the barn and tough as nails on the racetrack.”
Kandor Hanover will be bred in 2013.

It was a thrill to own this great mare with two close friends. John Burns deserves all the credit for breaking and training her and getting her to the races. These kind only come along very infrequently. I want to thank Randy Waples, Jack Moiseyev, and Dave Palone for delivering almost all her wins. Bill and Brian Zendt were also instrumental in her successes at the Meadows. I feel so thankful to have been able to enjoy her racing career.
