State One Smiley finished off a clean sweep of the Pop-Up Series at Woodbine Mohawk Park as he pocket-popped to victory in the $25,000 Final on Sunday, Dec. 14.
After producing the fastest kick off the gate, State One Smiley ceded control to 4-5 favourite Ginger Tree Finny (James MacDonald) and accepted the two-hole heading to the quarter in :27.3. He stayed glued to the leader’s back past the half in :56 until J.R. Plante released the gelding when flushed out by the advancing Doc Houston (Tyler Borth) approaching three-quarters in 1:24.4. State One Smiley chipped away at Ginger Tree Finny and lifted past the favourite in the last 1/16th of a mile to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:54.1. Larceny (Billy Davis Jr.) came from the backfield for third.
State One Smiley snagged his fourth straight win for trainer Justin Turcotte and improved his career record to 16-for-38 with $87,532 in earnings. Gaston Dumont of Drummondville, Que. owns the four-year-old son of State Treasurer-Windmachine. The winning gelding returned $7.10.
The $15,000 Pop-Up Series Consolations went to Tricky Mcwicky ($3), who won by three-lengths in 1:54.4 for driver Doug McNair and trainer Mike Vanderkemp, and Century Lucifer ($7.30), a 1-3/4-length winner in 1:55 with Borth aboard for Rene Dion. The series was for horses that had started for a purse of $10,000 or less in their last three starts and were non-winners of $50,000 this year. Also eligible were non-winners of $30,000 in 10 or more starts in 2025.
