Chewy Baca nipped even-money favourite Sterling Cooper at the finish line to steal the glory in this week's $10,500 Open Pace on Sunday, Dec. 13 at Fraser Downs.

Fresh off two consecutive Open wins, the Bill Davis-trained Sterling Cooper crossed to command from his assigned outside post and went unchallenged through fractions of :27, :56.1 and 1:24.1. However, Chewy Baca, who was tracking in third-place, made his move at the third-quarter mark and defeated the favourite by a nose in 1:53.4 over the sloppy track.

Chewy Baca (Relentless Yankee-Die Searching) notched the 12th win of his six-year-old campaign and has now earned $62,885 in 34 seasonal starts for owner Dr. James Findlay of Maple Ridge, B.C.

The win was the third in a row on the 11-race card for driver Travis Bowman, who also teamed up with Chewy Baca's trainer, Sean Lancaster, for an earlier win with Magic Number. Art The Third was Bowman's second Sunday winner from the Michael Arsenault stable.

Brandon Campbell matched Bowman for most driving wins on the day.
