Sent off at odds of 7-1 in Thursday’s $50,000 Open Trot, Armbro Chronicle had many of the Woodbine handicappers scratching their heads trying to figure out how he’d do in his first since suffering an atrial fibrillation and finishing a distanced seventh in the November 17 edition of the Open Trot.
It didn’t take long for the Kent Baker trainee very long to send out a loud and clear message stating “I’m back!”
In rein to Mike Saftic, Armbro Chronicle blasted to the lead from Post 8 and never looked back. He chopped out splits of :27.1, :56.3 and 1:26.1 before fending off a pair of late challenges en route to the 1:54.4 score.
Enny Youngman, who was sent off at 26-1, made a late rush to finish a half-length in arrears. Race favourite Please Poppy, who came first over around the final turn, was a lapped-on third in the eight-horse affair.
Baker, along with partners Cal Patterson, Randy Fielder and Wayne Smith, watched their prized pupil notch his 10th win of the 2008 campaign and the 27th of his $932,692 career.
The six-year-old gelded son of Self Possessed is regarded by many as one of the leading candidates for the O’Brien Award in the Older Trotting Horse category.
