Victor Puddy pupil Lovemyrockinbird capitalized off a cat-bird trip to down pacesetter The Light Speed and take the $10,500 Preferred Handicap Pace on Sunday night (Dec. 11) at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Lovemyrockinbird settled behind The Light Speed to a :27.1 first quarter and tracked the leader's trail while Flash Cube mounted a first-over challenge through the middle half. The Light Speed posted a clip of :56.2 and 1:24.2 while under mild pressure from Flash Cube up to the final turn and soon saw that challenger falter through the pack. Off the turn, The Light Speed clung to a diminishing lead as Lovemyrockinbird rolled off the pocket trip to grab a neck decision at the beam in 1:53.3 with Jet Rock taking third, another three lengths behind. Major Hill closed from last for fourth.
A five-year-old gelding by Mystery Chase, Lovemyrockinbird won his 15th race from 79 starts and has now earned $172,223. Samuel Fillion steered the $14 winner for owner Limco Inc.
