Three-year-old pacing filly Fading Shadow made up a four-length deficit down the stretch to steal the glory from the dueling race leaders in Friday night's featured $8,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 at The Raceway at the Western Fair District.
Driven by Scott Coulter, Fading Shadow was second-to-last early on before following third-over in the outer flow and fanning four-wide down the stretch.
Ginger, the 3-2 favourite, had looped longshot Katherine B for the leading role during a :29 opening quarter and carved out middle splits of 1:00.1 and 1:29 with Thatgirlisonfire applying first-over pressure. The top two mares then went head-to-head with Maddys Credit moving three-deep off the final turn, but Fading Shadow was the late-surging winner as she prevailed by a neck in 1:59.1 over Thatgirlisonfire and Ginger.
Sent postward as the 5-2 second choice on the toteboard, Fading Shadow paid $7.50 to win.
The Shadow Play-Fade To Black filly is trained by Michael Carther owned by Malcolm MacPhail of Dover Centre, Ont. She improved her seasonal record to 3-2-10 from 25 starts and bumped her 2017 income to $46,697.
