Once a regular driver at his home track of Fraser Downs, Billy Davis Jr. will venture west of the northern New York circuit back to his home base in British Columbia for BC Breeders Classic Day Monday (Nov. 11).
Davis Jr., son of Fraser Downs’ late leading trainer Bill Davis, last drove at the Surrey oval on BC Breeders Classic Day in 2015. This year top Fraser trainer Rod Therres gives Davis Jr. drives in all four of the $100,000 finals.
“Obviously it's always exciting going back home and seeing family and friends that I don't get to see to often anymore,” Davis Jr. said. “I've always had a great relationship with Rod Therres and can't thank him enough for giving me the opportunity to drive for him again, we had a lot of luck together on this day five years ago hopefully we can repeat the success we had before.”
Therres and Davis Jr. team first in the Betty Millbank Memorial with Indigo Beach, a Shadow Play filly starting from post 8 with morning-line odds of 4-1. Therres steers his other pupil in the race, 8-5 morning line favourite Probert, from post 4.
Davis Jr. then drives the Therres-trained Sunshine Beach colt West Coast Beach from post 1 in the Robert Millbank Memorial. Listed the second choice on the morning line at 3-1, he competes against a Jim Marino-trained trio fronted by 2-1 morning line favourite Major Custard.
In the Mary Murphy Breeders Stake, Davis drives 3-1 morning line second choice Ocean Wind from post 4. Kelly Hoerdt steers the Rick Lancaster-trained morning line favourite Hottieonthehorizon from post 1. Hoerdt also trains and drives morning-line favourite Kneedeep N Custard in the Robert Murphy Breeders Stake, where Davis Jr. drives Spiderdman from post 5.
