Driver Brett Leblanc airmailed odds-on favourite Southwind Ricardo to the winner’s circle of the $5,000 Governors Cup Series Final on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Northside Downs.

Sent the 3-5 chalk, Southwind Ricardo battled for the front wide of Pictonian Fancypas through a :28.3 opening quarter. The pair continued to duel through a :58.1 half before Southwind Ricardo emerged on the lead past three-quarters in 1:29. Southwind Ricardo spun into the stretch two-and-a-half lengths in front of Pictonian Fancypas and opened his lead in progress to a 1:59.2 mile with a winning margin of six-and-a-half lengths. Wildcat Jet, stalking the top two, held third.

A six-year-old gelding by Dragon Again, Southwind Ricardo won his ninth race from 25 starts this season and his 29th from 131 overall, earning $99,578. Harold Le Blanc trains and co-owns the $3.50 winner with partners Joel Le Blanc, William Eymour and Bernie Gillis.
