All eyes – and a whole bunch of dollars – were on Hershey Seelster in Monday’s opening leg of the Harvest Series for three-year-old trotting fillies, but it was Saint Antoine who pulled a rabbit out of her hat to win the $17,000 affair.
Angelwithattitude shot to the early lead and had the field chasing her to the quarter pole in :28.2. Heavily-favoured Hershey Seelster was parked around the first turn before marching her way to the top in the backstretch. The 1-9 favourite hit the half in :58 and then the three-quarter pole in 1:26.4 before hooking up in a fierce battle with the first-over Saint Antoine.
Scott Young hustled the Brian Lee-trained Saint Antoine alongside and then by Hershey Seelster in deep stretch. Saint Antoine’s :27.3 closing panel earned her the win by 1-1/4 lengths over Hershey Seelster in 1:54.4. Muscle Envy was third.
Sent off at odds of 7-1, the daughter of Kadabra-Resortful improved her sophomore record to 2-4-3 from 18 starts with the win. Saulsbrook Stables Inc and Ed Gorc share ownership on the career winner of $58,241.
